July 12, 2010

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash., Jul 12, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Itron Inc. (NASDAQ:ITRI) announced today the installation of the one millionth OpenWay smart meter at Southern California Edison (SCE), one of the nation's largest electric utilities serving central, coastal and southern California.

OpenWay smart meters are an integral part of the Edison SmartConnect(TM) program, designed by SCE to help manage increasing demand for electricity and provide environmental leadership through energy efficiency, demand management, electric transportation and smart grid technologies.

OpenWay is a standards-based, open-architecture smart metering solution that features secure two-way wireless communications with each meter. OpenWay is engineered to meet a broad set of customer energy management requirements, such as real-time energy communication to thermostats, information displays and energy smart appliances using ZigBee(R) technology.

Installation of the one millionth meter took place July 12,2010, at a customer home in Redondo Beach. Several dignitaries were on hand to commemorate the event, including U.S. Representative Jane Harman (D-Venice), 36th Congressional District; Theodore F. Craver Jr., president, chairman and CEO of Edison International; Lynda Ziegler, senior vice president of customer service for SCE; and Malcolm Unsworth, president and CEO of Itron.

"Edison SmartConnect is an exemplary model of how technology can be applied to realize the benefits of the smart grid," said Unsworth. "We're proud that OpenWay is a key component of SmartConnect, satisfying one of the nation's most sophisticated utilities with field-proven smart grid technology."

The first OpenWay smart meter was installed in September 2009, and installations will continue through 2012.
